PA History In 300 Words (or less!)

The people of the Town of Andover established a school for local children in 1848. Originally named Andover Academy, it took the name Proctor Academy in 1881 to honor a generous benefactor. Throughout the Twentieth Century, the school gained a reputation for independence and self-reliance. During The Depression, students maintained and improved the physical plant, built a private ski area and tended extensive victory gardens. Early on, the college preparatory curriculum was balanced with novel, hands-on electives that continue today: boat-building, machine shop, forestry and land use management.

In 1971, a new leader, David Fowler, became Head of School. David brought a distinctive, new spirit to Proctor. Faculty and students gained new voice in community issues.... daily assemblies brought the school together.... relationships between students and faculty became less formal and more genuinely respectful. Throughout its history, Proctor has been a school dedicated to student success. Teachers, learning specialists, dorm parents, advisors and friends are here for you to exceed all expectations.

Proctor is the leader in experiential education. Some students elect to go west on Mountain Classroom; others sail a schooner to the Caribbean.
